Even with free tuition and board, there are expenses and barriers required to Senior High School which prohibit Ghana’s most economically vulnerable youth from being able to enroll.
Outreach and Enrollment
Anansi’s Ghanaian team visits junior high schools each year to tell students about scholarship opportunities and distribute applications.
Most students come from families without high school education. Their parents are unfamiliar with regional senior high schools or the enrollment process. Anansi staff help with school preference selection based on each student’s abilities and education goals.
Required Supplies and Provisions
Senior high schools in Ghana are all boarding schools and student enrollment is dependent on the ability to bring required supplies and provisions upon arrival.
The items students are required to provide typically include textbooks, a mattress and bedding, a cutlass, a chop box (containing food to supplement school meals), a clothes chest, shoes, toilet paper, sanitary pads, and a bucket, mop, and broom. When students arrive, they have to show all the required items or they will be prohibited from enrolling that term.
New Student Wellness Checks
For most Anansi students, relocating to Senior High School and living in the dormitories is their first time leaving their local village and being away from their families. The Anansi team in Ghana conducts monitoring visits for new students, assessing their wellbeing, quality of education, and providing encouragement for the transition into boarding school life.
