Elmina's claim to fame is St George's Castle and Fort St Jago. The castle was built in 1482 by the Portuguese and eventually turned into a grim slave castle complete with dungeons. You will find informative guided tours, a historical museum and a great gift shop in the castle now. Elmina is a wonderful small picturesque fishing village where it is easy to spend time enjoying the sights and sounds of the fishing activities.
