West African Bead Necklaces You will see some amber beads in seven of the last eight necklaces made by Akwaaba staff (Beads #4 file). The amber is authentic. Also, please notice that even when a somewhat symmetrical design is used, all of these African necklaces have an asymmetrical quality because of the irregularity of the hand crafted beads.
We were told that the brass elephant in necklace #133 was very old. When you buy Art in West Africa, you are often told it is old because sellers know that there is value in "old." We're not sure this elephant is old, but she could be. Anyway, she is certainly intriguing.
Paintings by Hayford Y.K. Okyere A Ghanaian painter living and working in Côte d'Ivoire, Okyere had this to say about the subject matter of many of his paintings: " I see women as custodians, symbols of African tradition and rich culture, hence the nature of my choice of figures: mainly feminine."
